Lower Peninsula hunters will be able to hunt over bait again this fall.
The Natural Resources Commission today voted 4 to 3 in favor of reinstating the practice that was banned three years ago after finding one Kent County breeding farm deer with Chronic Wasting Disease.
Three years of testing since has not turned up another case of the disease
State officials say the rules will return to what they were before the ban. The ban was called for as part of the state action plan if the disease was ever found within 50 miles of the Michigan border.
Hunters this fall will be able to use 2 gallons of bait spread over a 10 foot by 10 foot area, according to Mary Detloff, spokeswoman for the Michigan Department of Natural Resources.
A baiting ban, however, will remain in place in a six-county area of northeast Michigan known as Deer Management Unit 487, the state’s known Bovine TB Zone. It includes Alcona, Alpena, Iosco, Montmorency, Oscoda and Presque Isle counties.
The commission also approved a sunset provision that requires the DNR to revisit the baiting policy again in three years.
